DIY Scratch Art

The kids have been totally obsessed with scratch art lately. But a few days into being homebound by Jonas, they'd scratched their way through all 50 postcards in our stash. So we decided to make our own. I've seen several different tutorials, but we used what we had on hand (fortunately for our snowed-in selves, we always have a lot of arts and craft materials on hand!).

To make our scratch art, you'll need:
- sturdy paper (we used 140 lb watercolor paper);
- oil pastels;
- black chalkboard paint*; and
- a small sponge paintbrush

Start by letting the kids completely color in a piece of paper with the oil pastels. Try to encourage them to cover all the white area -- the more color, the better. Then let them paint a thin layer of chalkboard paint with the sponge paintbrush over the entire colored paper. Let dry for about 15 minutes and repeat with another thin layer of paint. Once dry (or even almost dry) give them a scratching tool (try a popsicle stick or a coin if you don't have a specific scratch art tool) and let them scrape a design!

Before Kane and Cam got to scratching, I cut the larger paper into postcard-size pieces. So they got a big kick out of trying to guess whose piece of artwork they were scraping. It kept them busy for a while, so it was a win for everyone!

*the chalkboard paint gives great coverage, but is difficult to scrape if you get the layers too thick. So keep that in mind. If you don't have chalkboard paint, try using black acrylic or tempera paint with a little dish soap mixed in -- it helps thicken the paint and cover the pastels better.
